German Shorthaired Pointer

Pointer Perfect

Germany has a long tradition in dog breeding. Some consider the German Shorthaired Pointer as perhaps their finest creation.

One set of 19th century breeders set out to produce the premiere all-purpose hunting dog. Initially intended for bird hunting, the intelligent and adaptable Pointer easily transitioned to other prey as well including, rabbit, possum, raccoon and deer.

And they didn’t just point. Hunters highly prized the dog’s sturdy, yet quick, build, their nighttime abilities and amazing endurance. With webbed paws and excellent swimming ability, the Pointer was a spectacular retriever on land or water. And when the day was done, the German Shorthaired Pointer was a great watchdog and family companion.

Trainability: C+
German Shorthaired Pointer’s are highly intelligent canines that usually catch on quick. But they need something to do. This is not a breed that will phone-it-in for a casual suburban lifestyle, they require an active lifestyle with lots of exercise. They can be a little challenging up to three years in age so early socialization and training can be a great benefit.
